Sassicaia is undoubtedly one of the most famous Italian wines in the world. It comes from a vineyard of 75 hectares, where parcels have different characteristics, limestone formations and high stone content, particularly marked by which the toponom ‘sassicaia’. The soil exposure is west and southwest. Fermentation is made in steel, at controlled temperature, with maceration on the skins of about 10 days. The refinement of Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC 2015 of the San Guido San Guido is taking place in French rower barrique for 24 months with subsequent bottle stop.
Cabernet Sauvignon 85%, Cabernet Franc 15%
At first sight, the wine is an intense ruby red. The nose experiences the aroma of mature red fruit, wood fruit and cola, aromatic herbs and roasted almonds. To the palate, the taste is austere, rich and compact. Show a strong body and a good acid component. It is continuing on dry fruit notes, with deep, persistent final.
Sassicaia is delightfully married to refined red meat-based dishes or hunting game.Great with meat, roast and beef fillets or with the Tuscan tradition dishes, with boar-based barbecue.
Ideally consumption: 2020/2032
Service temperature: 16/18 degrees Celsius
The manual harvest started with the Cabernet Franc in mid-September followed by Cabernet Sauvignon. The grape picking ended at the end of September with the higher vines located on the hills. Excellent quality of the grapes: perfectly matured, crispy and very healthy. A very good vintage that influenced in a very positive way the wines of 2015. 2016 is also a vintage worthy of praise (considered by some even better than the exceptional 2015).
TENUTA SAN GUIDO
Tenuta San Guido is named after the Saint Guido della Gherardesca who lived during the XI century. It is located on the Tyrrhenian coast, between Leghorn and Grosseto, in Maremma an area made famous by Italian Nobel prize winner Giosuè Carducci, and it stretches for 13 km from the sea to the hills. Three are its defining characteristics: the Sassicaia wine, the Razza Dormello-Olgiata thoroughbred studfarm and the Bird Sanctuary Padule di Bolgheri. They divide the estate between the Padule on the coast, the horse’s training grounds on the plain, and the vineyards planted up to 350 meters on the hills. The latter have been given their own DOC, the DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia, the first, and so far only case in Italy of a DOC contained in one estate. The wedding of Mario Incisa della Rocchetta and Clarice della Gherardesca on October 18th 1930 started it all. They shared a love for thoroughbred horses that made them form a partnership with horse breeder and trainer Federico Tesio. Mario Incisa’s love of good wine made him plant Cabernet vines in 1942 for what was to become Sassicaia. Seventeen years later the Bolgheri Bird Sanctuary becomes Italy’s first private nature preserve. “A story and an almost unreal wine dimension, that of the San Guido Estate, out of the ordinary and suspended in time, almost mythological”.
